Hi, I am heading over to Poland, Hungary, Austria and the Czech Republic and am wondering what kind of traveller's checks (american express or visa) and what currency (american or euros) are best? Thanks, Meg

Euros are now more widely accepted and preferred in Eastern Europe.

Hello Meg!
Welcome to Travellerspoint! :)
They are right...traveller's checks were great in their day....but with the advent of plastic ;) they are basically outdated. It becomes more of a hassle than anything. Credit/Debit cards are much easier and more widely accepted. Have fun on your trip!

I would agree with what has been said this far that travellers cheques are great in theory but more of a pain in practice. I took them to western europe a couple of years ago and it was a nightmare to try and get them changed. Hardly anywhere i went actually accepted them and i always had to find banks to convert them into cash. I found that last year it was much better to take about £30 in cash of each currency to cover the first night accommodation and enough to get u from the train station to your hostel. Then i used my debit card everywhere i went. Even in Romania i didnt have any problems using my card and it made everything so much easier. Evenbm if i couldnt use card there were ATM's everywhere that i could withdraw cash from.

Hope this helps.
