Hey there,
I'm new to the site. I'm curious if there is a layer-type functionality? I mean, is there a way to group certain types of trips (e.g., a layer or category for work trips, vacation, solo, group travel, or whatever)? As someone who likes to categorize things beyond a colour code (scientist here ), I'm looking for a way to break things down to more than just a single colour-coded list. Is this possible?
If I've missed the way to do this, please let me know.

Hi, welcome to the forum.

When you are using a large screen computer look to the right hand side. There are some categories there that may be useful. Looks like sample below:

General Travel Forums
General Talk
Travel Companions
Travel Photography
Round the World Travel
Travel Gear
Destination Forums
Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific
North America
Central/South America & The Caribbean
Africa and The Middle East
Community Forums
System Talk
Off Topic
Wiki Travel Guide

I hope this is something you can use.

(I don't use mobile phones for travel forums, so not sure if different using a phone.)

karazyal: Highway_Girl is asking about the trip/map functionality, not about the forum.

Highway_Girl: unfortunately color-coding is the only current way to add a layer of categorization. I don't recall ever seeing this request before, but I do see the use for it, and suspect there are several heavy map users who'd love to have this.

Do you have any thoughts about "how" you'd like to use this functionality, both when entering it, and when viewing the map? That is, what are your usecases? (Without wanting to steer your answer too much, I'm thinking about: would you want this to work like a filter on displayed trips? Is it more useful for you for swiftly locating a specific trip, or for browsing / getting an overview? ... any other thoughts like that?)

If Peter (the admin) also sees the use for this, I can imagine him adding it to his todo list - and then having a clear direction could be helpful.

Hi karazyal and Sander, thanks for your replies.

You got it, Sander, I was referring to the trip/map functionality.

Let's see if I can describe this clearly :)

I tend to think of my trips in different ways, so it would be cool to see certain types of trips displayed on the map and stats pages, as well as having the ability to export the filtered map.

How would this work? Well, these are my thoughts, but keep in mind I have no coding experience, so I have no idea how easy or hard this would be!

When creating a new trip, your first task is to give the trip a name, colour and description, so at that point there could also be space to assign a "category" (or categories). I'm envisioning a drop-down where you can select your category(ies), or have the option to create a new one if needed. I suspect user-defined categories would be best, based on the diversity of travellers on the site. Once you create a category, it will be available in the drop-down menu for all future entries (or when updating past entries). Maybe in the Control Panel, you can access your list to delete, add or edit categories, if you want to do it there.

When it comes to the functionality, I think this would be so much fun to use this feature for both the map and stats. I haven't played around with the site enough yet to know if there are more functions that this could be applied to, other than exporting. On the map and stats, I see that you can filter for a specific trip, so something similar could work for the categories- with a drop down menu where you can check off the ones you want to see (I'm thinking similar to the filter function in Excel columns.)

For example, if I only wanted to see trips categorized as "Backpacking", only those would show up on the map or stats page, whichever I'm viewing. If we can assign multiple categories to a singe trip, I could display only trips that have both "Backpacking" and "Solo" labels. If you want to get more complicated, you could have the "and/or" function for the filter, but that's probably going a bit off the deep end I even found, when entering trips yesterday, that I didn't like seeing the transcontinental flights, it was too messy, so I've deleted them. If there were categories, those long-haul flights could be parsed out as a separate group, and deselected, so as to not take over a global-view map.

Anyway, I hope that's clear! Happy to chat more anytime :)

I do use color coding for my trips but not that way - I use it to group the trips in a specific year togeather

Yeah, I definitely like the idea. I think at some point I'll have to make a release that is really just tailored around changes like this with improvements to the stats page included as well.

Good suggestion :)
