Hi all,

I'm a South African traveling to China for a 2 week training course soon. I'm sure this needs an F Visa. After the course I'd like to stay another 2 weeks and travel China as a tourist. The Visa F is valid for 30 days.

Can I travel with this Visa F, although it is not intended for tourism? Will I be blocked at airports?

The Chinese Visa Application Center here in South Africa says that it's not an issue, however I don't want to find myself at the airport ready to start my backpacking journey just to be told I have the wrong Visa and cannot do so.

Thanks in advance

It’s surely available to travel across whole China under your F visa, except Tibet and Xinjiang. Because the both regions need to be permitted for foreign travelers .

I'm also worried about the fact that the Visa Application Centre employee told me it's not needed for booked flights and accommodation, even though the application form asks for a detailed itinerary, that is a required field.

So why didn’t you ask the employee about the weird policy there?
