My sister and I will be in Europe/ UK over christmas new years and wanted somewhere warm to spend a couple of weeks in January.

We are particularly interested in travelling Spain (any other suggestions well received).

Does anyone know whether everything is open at this time, and where the best places to visit are?? I'm also keen to hire a villa or something cheap and settle down for a week or two of sunshine and tapas. Any ideas??

I was in Barcelona in January this year. I had a great time visiting the Gaudi buildings, La Ramblas, Montjuic and Montserrat.
I would highly recommend it.
I looked at your profile and found you are from Australia - I would say the weather in Barcelona in January is much like the weather in Melbourne in June/July. Similar minimums and maximums.

Yes, Barcelona could be a great option to stay in winter, because the weather is quite good although being in winter... The temperature is quite warm.
From Barcelona you can also visit Costa Brava region, which is 1,5 - 2 hours by car, and it's worth visiting.
