For my gap year next year I am considering travelling through Central and South America but I have heard some stories of it being quite dangerous for solo female travellers especially. Is this true and would you advise going on my own? Thanks.

going travelling solo in any country is not safe in my opinion, i would try to get a friend to go with you

I travelled by bus,Jan,Feb,this year from Cancun(Mex)throught all CA countries to Panama then by plane into Columbia by myself but I'am an old Aldershot man!!!.
I met and travelled at different times with a lot of single girls from Europe which just amazed me,they told me after the first week they had no fear or the fear disappeared!!!
All the Hostels where "they" stayed and moved on from you will meet lots of fellow travellers your age.
Their might be a few travellers from travellerspoint going at the same time so you might arrange to meet but once you are on the road for a week you will become very indepentent.
At night your friends will be your fellow travellers to share your stories of your trip on the road.
Even me at every new country as I got off the bus I felt a bit wary but after dumping my bag in a cheapie hotel room and having a walk my fears just disappeared so if it comes to the point to go or not to go; just do it!!!
Have a great trip and al de bes mon on your travels!!

Well I survived four months as a lone female traveller :) although did kinda get robbed - but not badly - the important thing is not too let your guard down at any time and try to dress like the locals - but if you want an opinion on if it is safe - yes - just be careful of travelling in off the beaten track type places alone and follow common sense!! I am going back to South America as a lone female with less fear and more wisdom so hopefully that is an incentive for you to do it!! I think you should!!!
