Not sure when I'm going but am thinking of going to Belize sometime in the future. Just trying to get a general idea of how things work around there. Love water and things related to like boating and snorkeling. Would love to do the Great Blue Hole. What fun things to do in Brlize City? Safe way to get from airport to City centre? Safe but cheap place to stay in the city? Any thoughts? Loren

I was advised to stay away from Belize City and I did although a lot of that kind of advice is more reactive than real. The Great Blue Hole is nowhere near Belize City. I am assuming that you are a qualified diver. Otherwise there would be no point in going there. It is no dive for an amateur.and it is not a snorkeling desintation.

You get there by going to either Ambergris Cay or Caye Caulker. You do ot have to go into Belize City at all. You can fly from the airport directly to Caye Caulker or San Pedro on Ambergris Cay - or at least you could when I was there some years ago and I don't think it has changed that much. If wrote up my trip and you might find that there are snorkeling opportunities in the cays https://grandmarbelize.travellerspoint.com/1/

It's some years ago now, but I've wandered around Belize City with no problems. The worst we suffered was some guy wanting to befriend us and show us round for a tip.

I've gotten a lot of that kind of advice over the years. But there wasn't anything in Belize City that I wanted to see so I didn't go. I've been advised to stay away from St. Lucia, the Barbados, St. John in the USVI, Cozumel (because some tourist was raped in Mexico City) and my home city of Baltimore has some sketchy areas. No one can be 100% safe anywhere, even in Bermuda or Canada or Disneyland which are pretty safe places.

Anyway, for snorkeling, if that is what is of interest (because the big Blue Hole (as opposed to Blue Hole park) is NOT a snorkeling destination - there's nothing to see except deep water), there are a lot of good places to go in Belize for that. Belize City isn't one of them.

Cozumel is another good place for snorkeling (or diving) and so are the Virgin Islands
