Hi, I'm looking for a luggage that meets the following criteria:

  • Has wheels, preferably 4, as I have a low back injury and can't carry heavy weight or things for long periods of time. Wheels should be sturdy and reliable and be able to withstand miles of walking on uneven pavement or stony pavement/cobblestones.
  • A very reliable, study handle that doesn't break. By handle I mean something I can push/drag the luggage with wheels or even lift the luggage with the handle without worry about breaking the handle mechanism.
  • Reliable zippers that don't break
  • A carry on that fits in overhead for most airlines. 9"x14"x22" is the standard from what I understand
  • Generally reliable material that won't rip. Bonus points if it is water proof

Any recommendations on the brand of luggage I should buy?

Thanks!

Hi.

For years I used a cheap carry-on and a check-in duffel bag. BUT getting a little older my knees started bothering me and I switched to a couple wheelies. One for carry-on that fits in the overhead and another for my check-in bag. (Lottery prizes on a scratch ticket .)

(Carry-on.) Fabric material with 3 grab handles. Top, middle between 2 zipper pouches and bottom. Pull out grab handle pulls up 22 inches and slides into a slot that is protected by a zipper flap. On bottom end formed plastic for durability with legs same height as wheels to keep bag even when upright. Check in bag, same-same. Only wider, longer thicker. My wheelies only have 2 wheels. So far, sturdy enough! I do not push them, I pull them with the handle. I connect the small wheelie to the larger wheelie with a strap.

So far, no problems. Used on planes, buses, trains, taxis, vans and jump on jump off transportation in Asia. (Bemos in Indonesia, baht buses and tuk-tuks in Thailand and Jeepneys in Philippines.)

Google search will give you some good reviews of suitcases. Consumer Reports and Good Housekeeping are 2 out of several test test labs.

  • Go to a few thrift shops. Thrift shops in towns near my have several suitcases and bags and wheelies. Not expensive.

I do prefer a zipper that I can put my little combination lock on when I leave the bag in a hotel. For travel through US airports, unless you have a TSA lock, the bag goes unlocked. I do use Electricians plastic ties to secure the zipper lock. These electric plastic ties are easy for any customs checks since a scissors will cut them. (Google type search still shows no problem with keeping the zipper locked together on check-in bags.)

  • I did look over my travel luggage for who made them. Nothing on the handles or printed anywhere. There could have been name tags that I took off 10 - 14 years ago.

Good luck.

Every suitcase I have had was fine, until it wasn't. I gave a brand new suitcase to a cruise ship roustabout and it came back with the handle twisted off. I have heard but haven't tried it that the bags which swivel on their wheels are easier to pull. I think it would be a bonus if the wheels were protected from being snapped off. Because putting the bag in the overhead, the wheels stick out.

Before I retired, I had a lot of equipment to move around. I used a collapsable luggage cart which worked better than a wheelie bag for me.

I haven't had all that many of them that I can recommend something - like Albert (above) the things that last I probably can't remember where I got them. For a long time I used a bag that I inherited from my mother - who knows where she got it.

I like bags that have a frame but are made of a tough fabric and have a gusset that I can expand. If I was to have a hard side suitcase I wouldn't want to close it with a zipper

Forgot this in my previous post.

The fabric cases I have also have adjustable snap fasteners to take pressure off the zippers. (Two on each side.)

Good luck.
