Hello,
We are heading to Romania by car quite spontaneously and will have approximately 10 days there. We will be entering the country from North West (from Hungary).
Could you please share your travel advise: what not to miss and perhaps some places off the beaten path? Where to be careful about bears?
Is it worth trying to put our feet into any neighbouring country like Serbia, or this time will only be sufficient for Romania?
Thanks in advance!
Dovilė

Are you driving your own car or is it a rental one?

Should we be concerned about travel safety or driving with a foreign car plate?

I was asking, because most german car-rental-company doesn't allow driving to Romania. But as it is your own car you'd be ok.
Our Foreign Office warns about vehicle theft and car break-ins, especially in expensive cars and recommend parking only on superviced parking lots.

Thanks a lot. I was hoping the situation is better now… Probably people from Romania could advise better.

I loved the area around Brasov, very pretty countryside. Particularly after the concrete of Bucharest.
Depending on how quickly you like to travel yes 10 days could be long enough to nip into Serbia. I liked Belgrade a lot.
I travelled by train, visiting Belgrade, Sofia, Bucharest, Brasov in about ten days. Each town had free (for tip) walking tour, I'd recommend that as a good way to learn about a place from local kids.

Do you establish an entering point, for Romania. Is it from NW or from West.If you decide to come, through Petea, there are two options, ore more...Few spa spots, very cosy with thermal water, than a nice and huge Botanic Garden, than along northern side of Romania filled with traditions and wooden houses and cousines...than ,perhaps Bucovina a well preserve monasteries region...so on...let me know a little bit more about entering point, your interest,travel,history,nature...
Let it be.

Hi Mircea,
We will most probably enter from Oradea side. We are interested in nature, culture, history, so old little houses, castles, cemetaries, monestaries, rivers. mountains, caves, salt mines, etc. are very interesting to us. Maybe also wine regions Thermal springs - I am not so sure, maybe one spot we could visit, but that’s not a priority. We are not sure what would be the optimal route. Still hoping that we will have enough time to exit Romania into Serbia. Would you recommend going all the way to Bucharest, or can we skip it? And how real is the bear threat, what to do not to meet a bear - just be loud, so that it hears us early enough and runs away? Which are the dangerous places for bears?
Thanks,
Dovilė
