Hi.
Millions of tourists have visited Thailand as a solo traveler. (Including women alone, retirees alone and everyone in between.) If you really think you need to share hotel rooms with someone, my opinion, choose someone from where you live now vs a random total stranger.
Thailand gets tourists every day of the year. Bangkok will be cheaper than Phuket when it comes to transportation. Bangkok has some cheap city rail service and buses. Meter taxis in Bangkok might be cheaper than Melbourne when you pay the meter fare.
Bangkok has lots of hotels and some hostels too. Plan a budget out and determine how much you want to spend on a hotel room each night. I would expect Bangkok to be cheaper than Melbourne for a visiting stranger.
The month you visit Thailand will determine the best beach for swimming or even diving. Some beach areas better than others at different time periods. Christmas - New Years holiday periods most expensive for hotels

There is some distance between Bangkok and Phuket. Your visit is a little short on time. You might be able to stay a little longer with cheaper hotels. Work up a budget to see how much per day you have available for hotels and day to day expenses.
I think Bangkok will be cheaper than where you live now for tourists. No need to choose the most expensive hotels or guest houses to stay in.
What month will you be in Thailand? Were you planning on a one way flight to Bangkok and one way flight back home? Flying between Bangkok and Phuket is not that expensive.
Phuket. There are some beach areas closer to Bangkok. Only you know if you are visiting the Phuket area for diving or for nightlife. Pattaya, nearer Bangkok, has a beach and cheaper hotels, nightlife, etc. *If you intend to swim and dive at a beach, Pattaya is not that good! But it is a cheap beach area with an easy cheap 2 hour bus ride from Bangkok. You even find pools at some of the cheap hotels.
Up to you!

Never heard of sharing airline flights before. All flights I've taken has been one person=1 seat.
Sharing a hotel with a stranger? I assume you mean sharing a room as separate rooms might as well book separately.
As above Thailand is easy travelling solo. Unsure why you'd want company of a stranger.
