Hey everyone,

I'm Ruben, a Frenchman about to turn 30. I'm in a phase of reflection on the meaninglessness of existence. And to help me find answers to impossible questions, I've decided to quit my job, leave my city, sell all my possessions and travel the world on my motorbike. A bit of a drastic move, but hey, only got one life, don't we?

First stop should be East Africa. I am hoping some wise adventurers on this forum will be able to provide me with some tips. I'll post something on the dedicated part of this forum about it.

Anyways, looking forward to talking with y'all. Thank you!

Very ambitious.

Investigate your visa requirements. Got a passport yet? Have you considered how to support yourself? You may be traveling through some desolate location AND you may be the wealthiest person around - and all alone!

You have to investigate how a tourist can cross borders with a privately owned vehicle. (I am guessing that you will have the necessary licenses and whatever documents various border checkpoints will require.)

Keep in mind, if you are in a serious accident, and not just material damage, any medical insurance policies you have may be void on motorcycles and possibly specific areas of Africa, so check first.

  • You may be an excellent and skilled motorcyclist, however, it only takes some "less experienced" operator smashing into you to put you in a hospital for a long time!

Have backup sources for money. Do not travel with a single debit or credit card. At times you will be the richest person all alone in a remote location! Don't flash a lot of cash in public. Stay vigilant!

Keep in touch with family and friends so they know where you were last at if you come up missing!

Do not travel with lots of fancy gold jewelry or expensive Rolex/Piaget watches or you will make yourself a big, fat target!!

There may be some expat forums for East Africa that have present day advice.

Check with your French Embassies for warnings or other advice for your safety.

  • I have been to a few places in Africa but not solo and definitely not alone in remote areas.

Good luck.

I have to admit, I'm a little jealous. But the transport you've chosen is not the safest, bro ;)
