In Brazil you'd be better off using Reais. I live in Sao Paulo and I've
never seen people usings dollars here, although more touristic places
surely will be able to deal with dollars. But, for buses, small shoppings etc., use reais. You can also exchange the Dollars once you get here. In Peru, Dollars are more used, but it is always good to have some local currency as well. But, again you can exchange the dollars
to sol. in Peru.

Hi lindsay, I have been in peru here for the past month and I have some dollars which I needed for a taxi or two but I just take money out of the hole in the wall (atm´s of which there seems to be no shortage). Also the atm´s offer you the local currency soles or dollars. A word of warning, if you get to lima make sure you leave your passport behind you in the hostal as I met two Irish girls last night who had their bag taken from them. They had their passports and cash in it. One of the girls was a black belt in Karate but when you being mugged you cant always think straight. They are meant to be flying to cuzco this week and need new passports now.
Cheers David
