I was thinking of putting this thread in General Travel.. (if anyone feels its better suited there, feel free to move it! )

What are means by which you can travel differently. Differently as in not-the-usual way of travelling.. or seeing places. I know some, have done some but would love know more if you have experimented..

- long road trips - some ideas could be - route 101, route 1, new england in fall, route 66, louisiana swamp roads
- corss country train trips - There are atleast 3 routes. I've done one.
- biking (motor bike or bicycle) - for the tough ones, I'd say atleast long distances. I'm sure it'd be fun but never did it.

- freight train hopping - am still excited about it but seems the risk outweigh fun.

- hitchhiking - again the same.

What else?

I think back packing as in carry your tent and hike, like hiking the appliacian trail is an interesting way to see the east coast.

You are right V! This would be a good thread for General Talk. But, since you are commenting specifically in this post about travel routes within the US (Hwy 1, Route 66, etc.) - I think it should remain here in N. America. (In other words - I won't move it at this time.)

Again, I would think very long and hard about freight jumping or hitchhiking. Though both are cheap/free modes of travel - the down sides outweigh the up sides tremendously. (Yeah, I sound like a mom - hear it all the time here! ;) )

I like long road trips. Though we haven't done the one's you have mentioned - we did drive the majority of the Florida coastline over a 10 day period. It was great fun and saw some great things.

Years ago I drove RT from Chicago to Moscow, Idaho to visit a friend. Made several stops along the way and it's one of my favorite memories. I had never seen large herds of American antelope before, nor large herds of free-range cattle standing in the middle of the highway on the top of a butte in Montana at 3am! (The brakes in my car were never the same again! )

Hot air balloon comes to mind. Get one of these either in Albuquerque, New Mexico or San Diego, California and travel up (no pun intended)to 100-150 miles at a go.

My mom always wanted to do this, so on her 80th birthday, she did!

They have a great Hot Air Ballon season in Tucson Arizona too! :)
I would love to see the Grand Canyon from there.

I think alternate traveling is the best. i really dont like cars, i think they take alot away from it.. (used to travel with family in car allover) a friend of mine hitchhiked from NJ to south florida, and he said it was the best experience of his life. and i never would have met him if he didnt =) hes been traveling ever since. (we usually do veeery low cost traveling, more like vagrant lifestyles =) and i think you can get more out of it that way. (also take into account i am a nature boy to extreme.) oh yea, and hi everybody!
