Hey Jorppa,

Well, I am from a little city (officially it's only a town) called Hilversum which is about 25 minutes by train outside of Amsterdam. The music culture isn't that spectacular though and it's the kind of place where you need to know someone to have a good time I guess... :)

Utrecht is very nice, lots of canals and students (more per head of population than Amsterdam I believe) and bars as well as music available there. Plus its in the center of the Netherlands so not a long ride (but then again, nothing really is....hehehe).

Maastricht (down south) is also a very nice city. I have spent a couple of weekends there throughout the years.... a very peaceful and slightly more laid back type of atmosphere and personally I find the people a bit more friendly than the middle/north.

Hope that helps!

I'll chuck my two cents in as well.

Utrecht and Maastricht are good suggestions, Leiden and particularly Groningen are good student centres and tend to have quite a few gigs/bands etc. Both are very pleasant cities as well.

I think that Den Haag/The Hague/ 's Gravenhage is wonderful, although strangely is fairly lightly touristed and not sure about the music scene. The sort of beach suburb around Scheveningen can have stuff on though, particularly in summer months.

Rotterdam has always got something going on, although in my view it's very definitely a marmite type place - you either love it or hate it. Haarlem is also a possibility, although it might be too close to A'dam for your liking.

Unfortunately, i agree with Sam that Hilversum isn't the most exciting place to head unless you know people.

You can normally find something (although not neccessarily to your taste) in Arnhem, Nijmegen, Eindhoven, Zwolle, Tilburg etc, although that can be more hit and miss. And finally I must mention Delft (where i used to live) which is another lovely place, has quite allot of students and lots of small gigs etc.

HTH although i kind of doubt it
