I'm thinking of doing some Voluneer work in Peru for a few months, i know what the costs are going to be like there, but i'd like to move on to Chile and then Argentina for a couple of months each and explore the country's a bit , i'd like to know how much i should budget for, keeping in mind i plan to travel by bus and stay in the cheap but decent hostels , also where should i go , what to see, any advise on the best times to go .

Thanks in advance

When I did Chile, Argentina and Bolivia in 2003, I spent around $US 40 a day. The lowest I have heard of anyone getting by down there is around $US 25 a day - but that's pretty bargain basement. Chile is more expensive than Argentina, so if you are looking to stretch your dollar, you might want to spend more time in Argentina and less time in Chile.

The very south of Chile and Argentina can get pretty cold, so you should try and go in the Austral summer (Jan-Feb-Mar) if you want to go and see Patagonia.
