In LA, try to see the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

Hotel Del Cornado on Coronado Island in San Diego is a must see. It is an historic hotel on the beach. Quite beautiful. It's expensive to stay there and not really centrally located for all other sightseeing, but try to visit if you have time.

San Francisco is wonderful too. I always stay at the St. Francis Drake (historic hotel in Union Square). It is centrally located for shops, restaurants and trolleys. You can do a day tour of wine tasting in Napa or Sonoma. Of course you must go to Fisherman's Wharf and see the seals laying out in the sun. For a quick clam chowder, the Boudin Sourdough Bakery & Cafe at the Wharf is good and the best seafood is at McCormick and Kuleto's also at the Wharf.

Have fun!

The South is gonna be real hot. Disgusting, maddening hot. Rome in August hot. That said, Grand Canyon, 4 corners, Bryce Canyon, New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville, the Smokey Mountains (or any of the blueridge parkway in that part of the world), Key West (if you are going that far south), Williamsburg Va, DC, Philly, NYC. Should keep you busy for a while...
