Well my search around the internet has turned out to be worthwhile, love the forums and I think I will be making a lot of use of them in the coming months.

At the grand old age of 32 I finally have a window to do something I have always wanted to do and travel the world. My wife and I and off on our travels from June 1st for 12 months. This is the first time we have ever done anything like this and I am getting very excited by it all.

General plan is

North America - 4 Weeks
South America - 10 Weeks
South pacific/Australasia - 18 Weeks
Asia - 14 Weeks
Eurpoe - 6 Weeks

The whole thing is so hard to organise but I have an appointment with STA travel this Saturday so hopefully things will be finalised then. We have looked to do a lot over overland stuff in each continent specifically

New York-Maine-Canada-Lakes-Chicago
Australlia(all over the place)

Quite comfortable about most of these except those in SA and Asia. any advice would be welcomed on alternative good overland routes or problems with those suggested.

The only other big question is the RTW ticket versus as you go option. RTW ticket seems popular and I thinki suits us newbies better.

Thats about all for now, but I will be back with more and to read how everyone else is getting on.

Hey Tommo; welcome to the forums!!

That's quite the trip! I love these forums but sometimes get so jealous of reading where everyone is off to Oh well, my time will come.... of course, when you are reading about or working with travelling every day it kind of gets under your skin.

Nothing quite like visits to a travel agent to sit down and book a RTW ticket. I remember the first time I did that. I was going for a plain round trip to Oz and then got side tracked and sweet talked into a RTW trip; never once regretted it of course!

I am afraid I can't give you much help there on those overland routes. Haven't done them myself so wouldn't want to make any claims there. The Singapore - Bangkok one seems pretty straightforward though.

Look forward to seeing you around more!

Yep hi Tommo :) I agree these are great forums. Everyone's so helpful with information and everything. If you and your wife happen to be on a similar itinery to me around August to December time then maybe you could join me. Myself, along with a few others are travelling to US, Central and South America. Then I am going to OZ from November time onwards. I was a little apprehensive about travelling to SA at first but the more I have talked about it and the more I've read I am more comfortable and confident about going now. I'd say alot of people seem to go out there also so its hardly likely you and your wife will be alone. I am currently gathering information up on the area and finding out more. I plan to be in Chile at some point in September and then as mentioned before I will be in OZ from November so if your plans happen to fall similar to mine then maybe we could all meet up. If not then hope you have a great trip.

Rach :)
