Hey Tony, if you travel for a longer time trough India it would be wise to buy the lonely planet guidebook of India. You will find all budget accomodation in this detailed guide as well as other practical info. For Mumbai you will find a wide choice of budget accomodation in the citypart of Colaba (in the southern parts of the city, this is the touristpart). I found a room for 300 rupees (6 Euro) per night. Mumbai is expensive compared to the rest of India. In the rest of India you will get a room for half this price. Enjoy your stay in this fascinating city.

hi tony,

unfortunately wouterr is right about prices for accommodation in mumbai being higher than anywhere else in india :(.

i gather you're flying into mumbai plus it's your first big trip, it could make sense to spend a little more money on a nice hostel, hotel, whatever, as india tends to be kinda overwhelming at the beginning. besides there's loads of holidays in india, so booking ahead could save you some bother (a lesson learned ;)!).

just have a look at whatever result your searchengine gets out of 'mumbai hostel' or 'bombay hostel' and check pictures and prices...

good luck,
