When I want to use repellent I put it on my clothing (I wear long trousers and don't wear sleeveless tops or bikinis. Then I only have to put extra on the little bit of skin that is exposed. I have also bought insect repellent clothing from a site called Rails to Trails - it is for people that work outside clearing brush etc.
Mosquitoes are attracted to potassium, salt, carbon dioxide, and lactic acid released by your body, so it helps to avoid salty and potassium rich foods like bananas, avocados, and dried fruit. Fragrances are known to attract mosquitoes. Floral scents are especially attractive. Sweat also attracts them (my dad was very attractive to mosquitoes - he was from the dry mountains and when he settled on the humid coast, he just did a lot of sweating). Alcohol can also attract them as can dark clothing.
Most of the things that are touted as alternatives do not work. And some people apparently attract bites more than others. For the real mosquito magnet people there may not be anything that really works. People with blood type O were 83% more likely to attract mosquitoes.
