Hola todoas! I joined travellerspoint yesterday and found lots of help already.
I'm leaving for Mexico in a couple of weeks and for a long time. I'll go long-distance bus across Mexico for 2-3 months then decide where to stay.
I'm thinking of Veracruz, Puebla, Oaxaca, Mexico City, Morelia, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, that sort of thing.
I can't find a Youth Hostel in Veracruz, official Hostelling Intl or not.:( Does anyone know of a Hostel type place in Veracruz where I could spend some time to get the feel of the place?

Also, I won't have my credit card for a while. I'll use my bank debit card for withdrawals and that's fine with me. How can I reserve in a Youth Hostel before I reach the destination? Will a phone call be okay? Thanks for your replies, this lodging thing worries me when I'm on the road for months. I have to stay within budget... sorry if I laugh, the word budget has that effect on me!

gracias y hasta luego, maybe in La Bamba city!

I can see you have made contact with Leiro in Puebla.

well as for the places you have planned to see I can tell you
last June I took holidays around Guanajuato, Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende, Morelia, and Veracruz

the prices we paid for hotels were between 50 to 90 us. dollars.

Hostels, are anything between 10 to 50 us. dlls.

for reservations try:

the one in Jalapa Veracruz is

Hostel de la Niebla
it is $11 usdlls.
8 euros

tel: 2288 172174
2288 182842

I got thisinfo from a leaflet they gave me a while ago.

there are hostels in every corner of Mexico, whether touristic or not.

there is a very cheap place in Guanajuato they have a website

Casa de Pita:
and they say yu can get a room for 25usd.

Guanajuato lodging is expensive, so this is a good price

Veracruz is cheap, eat at the markets (wherever you go)these are good places to eat, and they are clean and cheap. if you become a regular, they treat you especially.

San miguel de allende is very very expensive and it is a touristic - foreign kind of environment, there dont try the market to eat, it is expensive and tasteless, that market is not very good, but fruits and veggies are super!

Also try this website is super, they provide you a full list of places where to stay and where you can book, they have great pics and it is of great help.

any help, drop a line!

hi taki
thanks a million for this useful information! I replied to you by private message the other day.
I checked out all the links you mentioned, great!

Still haven't found a hostel in Veracruz City where I'm hoping to spend some time so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for when I get there :)
I'm all set, arriving at Matamoros on Sep3 and going south by bus from there.
Gracias y hasta luego!
