Hi Marty, Left Paraguay in Feb 05 after 3 months. Didn't go to CDE but , as you say, it is known for the cheap electrical stuff there. Everything is either smuggled, stolen or are copies.

In Asuncion( the capital) there was shop after shop with cameras, mobile phones, MP3s etc. Compared to UK prices were a LOT cheaper. One problem in comparing prices ( I was looking at cameras myself)
was models. You know the thing eg: in Uk the camera could be called Canon Sureshot125 in Paraguay it might be Canon Swift 25.I suppose you could look at camera specifications on the net for Uk prices and compare with the spec on offer in CDE. You probably already know that CDE is not a good place to be in the evening!!!
Good luck!

Lots of brazilians go to Paraguay to buy electronic goods as it is alot
cheaper. I think the reason is that they impose little or no consumer-tax. Digital camaras is a good example. The problem is that
normally you either wan't get a garanty. Or if so, how to use it if you're camara breaks down far away from Paraguya. There are also example
of people getting cheated - of course -but its rare. Indeed it is really cheap, so if you have a good knowledge of brands I would advise you to buy there. Buy the way, I'm not sure that the prices is that
competitive compared to Europe or US. For instance celular phones or
camaras are about 3 or 4 times cheaper in Europa than Brazil. I think it is about the same ratio to Paragauy. So depending on where you live you
might be able to find a good deal there.
