Just wondering how all the seasoned travellers out there cope with a bout of homesickness when it hits. Do you have certain things that you find helps to get through it?

I've been fortunate enough not to have had to deal with this too much, but there are occassions when I'm a bit bummed about missing a good party or some other event where I know I would have had a blast with good friends. In this day of mobile phones, I find calling them right in the middle of the party usually kicks it as far as I'm concerned :)

I've seen a few people that had really bad cases of homesickness though. The worst case I recall was two girls that arrived from the Netherlands in Australia in the evening and left the next morning. They spent less than 12 hours in the country!!! So stupid really. They didn't even give it a chance....

Being around other people helps. My two worse cases of homesickness were stuck alone one evening in this tiny London hotel room, and another time in my car alone deep in the forests of northern Canada.

Another quick pick-me-up is writing e-mails (I don't do postcards) to family and friends. My sister and I can do a lot of e-mail when I'm travelling !! One lesson I did learn was to avoid giving mom my e-mail address!! No mom a few more days, I'm fine, yes I'm eating three square meals a day......

From my experience, the best way to cope with it is to call someone close to you, a friend or relative. This helps very well, from two points of view: 1) you will get to talk to someone that really knows you (not only the other backpackers in the hostel) and you can tell that person how much you miss him/her, and
2) you will be reminded of that things back home haven't changed, nothing new has happened, and in general everything is just as boring as when you left... Makes you appreciate your travels more!

Well said Suzanne .... life will alwyas be the same at home and i suppose its difficult to realise when you're away and missing people. I'll keep that in mind when i'm having a bad day (when i eventually get outa here lol!!)
