Hi there, me and my friend are starting a (well earned!)trip travelling around thailand and bali next monday (6th) but we've only got 3 weeks. We're wondering if anyone will be in bangkok then and would fancy meeting up to give us some hints over where's good to go in such a short time. Even if anyone can let me know anything by email it would be much appreciated as we want to make this as good a time as poss!! Cheers Anna

Have 2-3 days in Khao San Rd and explore Bangkok many sights then use bus's to travel Thailand as Thailand Roads and bus's are top class and so cheap and you can get anywhere in very fast time.
I usually jump on in the morning 0800 and jump off before 1200,max 4hrs and with Lonely Planet South East Asia it has all the info you need for any journey.
From Bangkok you can be on the Pattaya coast in 2hrs and make your way along the coast and its many islands to explore and get to Trat and why not go into Cambodia to Sihanoukville as its so easy to do while you are their, page 753.
Or go down the coast to Phuket and stop off as and when!!!
Or go in Chang Mai direction and have day trips into Burma and Laos.
Have a general idea which way you want to travel then from Khao San Rd just jump the bus and away you go.
After 2-3 days Khao San Rd you will be seasoned enough just to do your own thing so have a great 3 weeks!!!!!!!and enjoy your travels, you can always extend your ticket!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bali's a gorgeous place, the architecture, the ambiance, just grabs you once you land on the island. Unless you're into crass commercialism-please avoid Kuta beach. For me, there's nothing Bali about it. Instead, head out to Ubud at least, for accomodation prices is half and the views of the stepped rice fields are breathless. Don't forget `Lake Batur' at Kintamani. There is this huge volcanic lake where the clouds hang so low over the surface. It's like stepping back in time when i was there..the villagers still took their baths in the open in the lake. Its so beautiful and they are hardly ANY tourist around.
Alternatively, my friends and i will be in Khoa San road in the next 2 weeks..21oct-23; before we head off to siem reap. If you like, we could meet up:-)but please send a personal message so we can work out the details.
But if not, enjoy yourselves in Bali & Bangkok..!
