How exactly does the Travel Helper work?
Im a travel helper for the USA but actually can only help with Boston/New England. Occassionally I get help emails sent regarding California, Florida, MidWest, etc. Which might be another part of the World as far as what I know about these regions.

Is there a way to have it limited to just the Northeast?

you will reduce enquiries to you if you make it plainly clear in your presentation what regions you know about

When one starts a thread, one has the option to specify the country your topic is related to. By selecting the country, the posted message will be sent via PM to all registered travel helpers of the country.

Currently, travel helpers for USA are not able to select specific regions in that country. While it is not hard for us to split USA into separate regions and the function is useful for travel helpers to receive notifications of specific areas they want, the main objective here is to help the travellers. I'm sure there are many travellers who want to travel to a few regions in the USA. If you are one, would you want to create multiple threads for one single country just to get the attention of the helpers? This would then create a lot of duplicates. And as a helper, would you want to reply a part of your help in this thread, and then continue on another because it's located in another regoin?

So I personally think it is easier and better to stay this way than to change and cause inconvenience to those who are seeking help. After all, if you are unable to help in that area, all you have to do is just to click on the delete button. ;)

Hey Jeff, Hien knows what he is talking about so just disregard the other post. :)

Hey Jeff,

It is a fair point. As Hien says though, it does create a few tricky issues for us. One possible solution would be to make it possible to specify a thread as 'USA' or 'USA - South West', etc.. Is there an accepted regional division of the US that we could use (but not quite as detailed as 50 separate states)?

Which ones bother you the most though? The forum notifications or the direct travel help requests? As massager suggests, the description can help limit the types of requests. Then again, I see that your description is already very specific. So, I'm guessing it must be the forum requests that are bugging you.

This is certainly an issue we would like to work through. As the site continues to become busier and busier, we don't want to have it so that people are swamped with emails from us. That just wouldn't be fun anymore

On the split of the US, whilst not perhaps ideal, timezone splits are well accepted, and if you lumped alsaka/hawaii into west coast, you could have a fixed 4 areas, or even comine the 2 central ones, essentially having east coast, west coast, and centre/the rest.
