Hey, your going for a month! thats great you can really get to know the city, and also have time to take day trips out and see the surrounding state!,

There are all the basic tourist things to do which you can easily find out about when you first arrive like climbing sugar loaf, seeing the corcovado, going to a footie match at the Maracana (biggest stadium in the world!)...
The one thing you cannot miss are the chilean steps in Lapa, and while you're there, the street parties on fri and!!
For the best beach scene head to Ipanema where you'll find all the beautiful people!
Also, there's the tram that takes you up past the major Favelas to Santa Theresa where the view is awesome, and the rickety old tram is a real adventure!!
Rio is a fantastic city, there are people there that well, lets face it might want to make your wallet lighter but as long as you are sensible, only take the minimum of cash out with you and dont flash around your camera you will be absolutely fine! I spent almost a month in Rio and loved every minute.

As for hostels and stuff, have you got anything booked? where are you thinking of staying?

Why don't you spend a few days on Ilha Grande, a lovely island about 3 hours by bus south of Rio.
My wife and I stayed 4 nights at the Aquario hostel close to the port village and had a great time.
You can find the Aquario on the website.
We were on the island during Carnavele and bumped into Colin Farrell standing at a waterfront bar.
My wife was stoked!!!
I have a pic of Ilha Grande on my profile.
