I am planning on travelling through
S.E.A with Thailand as main destination
next year sometime.

Any help on when is best time to go and
where to start, what not to miss and
an idea on costs as this will be my
first adventure to SEA.
I plan to stay for 3-4 months.

anytime - it's year round destination. However xmas packed and expensive.

start bangkok - do ayuthaya, kanchanaburi, chang mai, pai, krabi.

750 baht / 10 pounds / $15 per day

I second the recommendation on Kanchanaburi! I was there a few months back, and they have a monastary there where you can meet tigers, bit nervewracking, but fun all the same.

I also went to Koh Tao which in itself isn't that great, but I did learn to dive there which was fun, cheap too.

You have to go to Koh Phi Phi if you go to Krabi. Its a 1-2 hour ferry ride from Krabi to a beautiful island that is recovering from the devastation on the Tsunami. It is a must see, the most beautiful island in Thailand by far and lots to do, some great diving, lots of bars and restaurants and simply great beaches (its also where "The Beach" was filmed.

Koh Phangan is well worth the trip as well, but KOh Samui could probably be missed as its becoming more like Magaluf than a tropical paradise.

You can get by comfortably on 10 quid per day. In terms of time of the year, yes avoid Christmas and try to get there just before the rainy season starts if you can, so around May time I would think is ideal.

Definatley would recommend Kanchanaburi, it's a really lovely place with lots of great cheap places to stay right along the river kwai.
Ko Samet and Ko Chang are both really nice chilled out places on the other side of the gulf of thailand.
Unlike barge i wouldn't recommend Ko Pha Ngan, we were there for 3 nights last week and hated it! It could be anywhere. But I guess everyone is different. We went to Ko Samui and thought it was gorgeous. I've been to Magaluf (unfortunatley) and Samui is NOTHING like it, but I guess it depends on where you go and what you like. The beach at Cheweng is beautiful. Ko Tao is also a beautiful place, especially if you want to snorkel or scuba dive.
The weather here at the minute is really hot, we've been here since July. Although it's the rainy season it only tends to rain and thunder at night, leaving the next day either clear and sunny or a little overcast.

Hope this helps, Happy travels

Hey mate. Was in Thailand for 6 months, came back in may.
I went at the end of November. I enjoyed Bangkok around christmas and new year time. Lots of people, drinking having fun in the Khao san.
Chiang Mai is a nice place to chill out. A small city thats quiet but still nice accommodation, taxis and day trips! Cheaper than Bangkok too. A week was enough for me, but others stay longer.
Off the island of Ko chang is another island called KO Mak, can get a boat from ko chang to it. Very quiet and relaxed and beuatiful sand and sea. Very quiet at night and relaxing.
Maya Bay in Ko phi phi (where the beach was filmed) was naturally gorgeous if you look past the tourists. But the sand is white as can be and the sea is beautiful. The best beach iv e seen in Thailand!
Ko samet is really nice, but i only went for a day trip so cant say too much. But take some money with you because only 1 atm on the island!!!!
Pattaya is er interesting lol. A strange place, all i remember seeing is young thai women with old men. At night it is the adult disney land as they say. But definately worth a visit! Can take a boat to koh larn for the day from pattaya too. 50 p return!!! NIce quiet little island 30 mins away from pattaya. worth visiting if your in pattaya!
Spent most of my time in Bangkok, so i know a lot about that really so if you have any questions just ask!

Money--- like someone said 10 quid a day is fine for thai food, hotel and some beers. 10 quid= 700 baht.I stayed in an air con hotel with tv and hot shower for 550 twin. so 275 baht for me. ate a descent meal with coke for 50 baht. and its 35 baht for a beer from the 7-11 shops. 10 baht a bottle of water.etc etc

any other questions just ask

Thailand is one of the coolest places in the world with some of the nicest people you will ever meet. I highly recomned since you will be in the area to go see Ankor Wat in Cambodia, its a must see, one of the wonders of the world.

What about Sukhotai, seldom people mention this little historical town?

Hey Bug

i just got home from Thailand two weeks ago, and i can reccomend Koh Phangan for its very scenic beaches and mountains. Also this is a nice place for going out and everything is still pretty decent. Koh Samui is VERY touristry with a large bar-girl scene, but Chaweng Beach is still very nice and fun both day and night. I think Bangkok will be fun for 2-3 days but be carefull not to spend to much money there on the amazing amount of goods there. While i think 700 baht a day will get you a roof over your head and food, i think that you need to budget a litlle more if you plan on doing any kind of excursions/sightseeing stuff.
