Hey everyone!!!!Im since back from my Round the world trip which was an amazing experience and Ive got itchy feet already so Im planning my next trip!!!!Well, I ended up doing the trip alone which was cool and this also resulted in meeting a lot of incredible people on my was, incidentally I met up with four people from Travellerspoint including a girl ashley who Id been put in touch with through here and had emailed for four months before I left!!!!But anyway......So Im planning my next big trip and Im hoping to finish the trip off with a couple of months in India.....However I met several people on my travels who had done India alone and said they wouldnt reccommend it to a female travelling alone. Just wondered what you guys think about this? They said India is hard and especially hard alone?would be interested if anyone had any advice or stories to tell?

Hi Twinkle,
I think India is a great place to visit. I make a trip there almost every year. As far as traveling alone as a female, there are some parts of the country that you may want to avoid. Ideally, you should try doing the trip with someone else or at least arranging to meet people in the different places that you visit. As far as places where I know for a fact that traveling alone should not be an issue, here goes:

1) Bombay
2) Goa
3) Kerala

This list does not in any way imply that other places in India are not conducive for a female to travel alone. It's just that men in certain parts of the country have this rather insane idea that any woman from the west is "up for grabs" (if you know what I mean). I am guessing this is because of the way western women are portrayed in the media. As far as the places I have listed, you can rest assured that you won't have such trouble in these places.

I strongly recommend checking out to make local contacts with people in India prior to your trip. I am sure the people on that website will be more than glad to help.

I hope I answered your question. Please feel free to message me if you want to know more.

Take care,

Hey travelled the whole world!!! India is quite tough to travel in, but for you less tough then any first time travellers. There will be some massive staring for a woman alone, but rarely you will be touched or something. It happened to a girl I met in India. She just slapped him in the face and off he was (on the ghats in Varanasi). As you know you will meeting loads of other what does travelling alone means.

Its great that you are going to India. You travelled the world....but haven't seen India????? YOU MISSED THE BEST PART OF THE WORLD!!!!! I will be in Kolkata from february to july 2006....if you are there let me know....
