Is there convenient public transportation from New Jersey to Manhatan daily? What the cost?

Is it wise to stay in a cheap hotel in New Jersey and shuttle to Manhatan for sight seeing?

There is good transportation from New Jersey to Manhattan daily. Depending on where in New Jersey you plan to be, there are two ways of getting into Manhattan.

1) PATH train (this connects Newart Airport to Manhattan, as well as Hoboken to Manhattan. It is a 24 hour service.)

2) The NJTransit trains: These trains run every half hour to Manhattan but the frequency decreases in non-leak hours. The cost is roughly $8.50 each way.

I would strongly recommend living in Manhattan. I think it is safe tp say you will not save much monetarily by staying in Jersey and commuting to Manhattan if you plan to travel there. It's also quite inconvenient for a traveller. Hope this helps.

There arent any hostels I believe in Jerzee that is close in proximity to NYC. Better off staying in the city.. at a youth hostel uptown.. I know they are a bit costly, but you probably will only be in NYC for a lil bit.

The cost are comparable to Youth Hostels in the London or Amsterdam.

Check some of the boroughs. Manhattan is going to be pricy but there are some good deals on hostels. If you can find something in Brooklyn or Queens, you can take subways b/w Manhattan. Staten Island doesn't have the mass transportation (you're better in Jersey in regard to this). You may want to check out some stuff in Brooklyn anyway, depending on your time there.

There are also ferries that go from Weehawken, New Jersey across to Manhattan. For the price of the ferry you are entitled to take one of their buses--and they have buses which go down to Downtown, down 34th street (Macy's and Madison Square Garden), down 42nd street (Times Square and the fashion district) and down 50th street(Rockefeller Square, Radio City Music Hall and the jewelry district).
