ah I see what you are getting at. Yeah that would get tricky. The white highlights would interfere with quite a few flags out there. Perhaps just a flat look would take care of that. *shrug*

Those do look good though.

It's not so much the highlights. That's just a layer over the top - pretty easy actually. It's more just trying to fit maximum detail into a minimum amount of space. I was wrong about the sizes of those others. The actual real flag space (minus border) is 12x9 pixels. If you were to just resize the american flag down to that size, you would end up with something like this. With a bit of love and attention, it could look considerably nicer, like this.

Now, I would probably make the flags a little larger to make things easier, but not much. I like them small and at somewhere around that size, they wouldn't be very obtrusive in the forums. Plus it saves us some bandwidth :)

I just looked at all the examples. Brendan's flag is a bit too large, but I found the 12x9 pixel size very hard to see at my sceen resolution of 1280x1024. I'm probably one of the few that uses that resolution, I know. Though, it maybe something to take into consideration...

I realize it would be a ton of work, but could the flags be linked to a larger version? If I was unable to really make it out, I could click on the flag and view a larger one - rather like the photo gallery capabilities.

I think the flags would be linked to a larger version; that's no problem since we already have the flags area with all these available.

Okay, I decided to play around with this too. I found something rather interesting when comparing Photoshop to Fireworks.

Fireworks: Here's my entries for usa auto and australia auto. Maybe it's just because I did them in fireworks or because they're slightly wider than yours Pete, but they come out pretty clear in this 'macroable' format....

Photoshop: usa auto Photoshop
australia auto Photoshop

I'm pretty surprised to see such a big difference and Fireworks definitely kicks butt on this one... they are slightly bigger bytes wise though.

[ Edit: ps. both at 15 px wide ]

Forget that last bit about the bytes being more. I just resaved the American one with a 216 palette instead of exact and here's the result: USA Flag Fireworks 216 palette

that is interesting about the fireworks auto. I just remember someone made a post a ways up about which flag would be placed? Where they were born, where they are living, where they are travelling.

I think a lot of people here fill out the profile with diffent intentions. I fill it out based on where I live at the moment. Unless I wasn't living in Canada I would still put my home town in Canada.

Some people seem to be putting where they are travelling at the moment. Interesting concept. Perheps having a couple more fields in the profile.
