I'm heading from thailand into Cambodia via Sihanoukville mid nov sole and wonder if anyone else is going that way about then or has any advice on where to go and more importantly where to avoid.

Enjoy Sikanoukville beach for a few days as you will meet lots of travellers "their" and just organise your trip to Phomn Penh by Minibus from their and the only people who travel will be other travellers so its not a problem.
Do a post on Travel Companions for maybe meeting up with other travellers.
Have a great time and enjoy your travels.

Sihanoukville is a great place to chill out and enjoy the water/beach. I would stay in the Victory Beach Hill area. There are plenty of places to stay, both very cheap and some nice places with a/c and cable TV. Many places to eat, most decent and low prices. You should see downtown S'ville, but I would not stay there. You can walk to the beaches from Victory Hill and the Capitol GH bus will take you to PP right from there. The moto drivers have a very bad reputation for overcharging and a fair number of visitors have been robbed at night going between downtown and Victory Hill. Carry minimum money on you at night, just common sense. PM me if you want specifics.
