Hey, I'm going over to Australia, Perth to be exact, in December of this year and was just wondering how easy it is, for someone with a WHV to get Bar work.

I heard that normally you need to be completely trained, in Australian Bar stuff. I'm fully trained in the UK and have previous bar experience already. I also heard it pays a lot better out there, lol.

Experience certainly helps. I'm not sure about Perth but in NSW you need to complete a 1-day RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) course before you're allowed to serve drinks. Basically it teaches you how to deal with drunks (Drunks, in a bar of all places) and costs about $70.00.

Ah. That's all right though, it's only one day and only $70. Thought it would be like a month or something lol. I really don't mind if it's like that in Perth. :)

Any idea of the pay? Obviously I know it varies from job to job. I think the average in the UK is £4.50 an hour, which works out about..$10.50 Don't know if thats good for bar work in Australia or not. :S

Perth an be a nightmare to find work as many places look for long-term staff and that 3 month restriction is a bugger. However it might be easier as you'll be there in summer. Get the West Australian on wednesday & saturday for the jobs and if you don't find anything in the city considering going bush. See Anissa at Travellersclub on Wellington street or the jobshop in Easyriders on William street.

Good Luck

i would not be happy at all getting $10.50 an hour for bar work... most people i know that work in hospitality get upward of $12 an hour (and $12 is only if it is cash in hand....)
but im in melbourne so i have no idea what it is like in perth... i dont think it would be that different....
