Travel Forums General Talk Is this a conspiracy?

Being American, I've seen a few movies that influence my thoughts on traveling to Asia. Do people really get arrested for petty crimes? Is it always hot and dirty?

Or is this just our government trying to keep everyone from moving to Asia because of the lower living expenses? ;) Is this a conspiracy?

Am I safe traveling to Asia?

Asia is a massive continent, which part do you mean? There are cold places and hot places all across Asia. Like anywhere, when you travel - learn the laws, and obey the laws.

What I think you are referring to is the prosecuting of drug laws. Thailand, Malaysia & Singapore are now considered developed countries, but they have very harsh drug laws. Both locals and visitors of these countries have been sentenced to death for drug trafficing. The amount needed to qualify for the death sentence is not that much by western standards. They take drug use and possesion very seriously. Do a google search using 'thailand prisons' and see what has happened to visitors that got caught with drugs. This should required reading for visitors to Asia that might use drugs recreationally.

I have spent 10 winters in Asia and never had a problem with the aurhorities. Obey the local laws, use your common sense and you will have no more problems than you do at home.

U dont hear of tourists getting arrested for petty crimes in almost all countries in southeast asia... foreign wire services pick up and sensationalise those nabbed for drug related crimes...

u dont come across people like charles sobhraj, preying on foreign visitors!

The only news that makes the news is "bad news:;ie if we where to believe everything we read/see in the news we would'nt leave are houses.
If we believed everything we read about volience, crime, places not to go we read in OUR newspapers about USA we would'nt visit Miami,New York etc etc etc but we know in every city in the world their is places we do not go especial at night.
The isolated news you read about SE Asia, think about the 2-5million tourists who go their EVERY YEAR and have a fabulus time so these isolated incidents have got to be put in prospectus.
Course its hot, course its dirty, course its friendly and cheap and another planet thats makes you apprecite you are a traveller and only passing through, what was the USA like 100years ago never mind 300years ago.
Are you safe going out alone into inner cities in USA,believe me you are safer in Asia.
Think "postive",book up and hit de road mon and if you need any help just ask!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have a nice day;dream of me!;dont!you'll have nighmares!!!!!!!!!
al de bes

It's no different from traveling anywhere else--just use common sense. Don't do anything that's going to get you into serious trouble, and keep your wits about you.

I will say this: traveling to Asia makes Europe seem E-A-S-Y! When you can at least recognize the alphabet to write down what a sign says, then you're in good shape. It was a bit unnerving at first, but we had a blast, and it's great to look back and know that we took a few baby steps outside of our comfort zones.
