Has anyone spent any time surfing in Portugal or South france? could you tell me of any decent surf spots that are more quiet than the main tourist beeches during the summer.

Also any info on good cheap accomodation would be great.

biarritz and hossegor (for surf clothing) in the south of france.

zarautz, mundaka and bakio in spain (not so far from biarritz actually).

regarding the accommodation in the basque country in Spain check out this website:, it has a database of country homes, some are quite trendy and rather posh, but most of them are clean and cheap.

I heard that Anglet, which is a little town on the side of Biarritz, is let say "better". Less people, less old tourists, more party young people... Biarritz is like the St-tropez of France, Anglet has as much good waves and nice, cheap hostels...

portugal has very nice surf spots.
near lisbon you have good spots but normally they are crowded with people. Costa da Caparica in the south of Lisbon or Guincho in the west are very nice places if you are staying in Lisbon. A very famous place for the surf is ericeira( not very far from Lisbon).
a bit more north you have Peniche where is less crowded and still nice spots. the best beach is Baleal, good for surf.
if you have a car, you can go to the southwest coast of portugal, there are very nice places that are still not much crowded. all the the coast from a Sines to cape of saint vicent has very nice places to surf. in vila nova de mil fontes there is a nice surfing comunity but in the summer might be crowded. i hear that in the north coast of portugal might be good but i don't know much.
