I'm starting in Mexico City and aim to work my way through Central America to Panama City, where i will fly to Sao Paulo to meet my friend. This leg of my journey is from new years eve to 16th feb, so it is going to be a bit of a whistle stop tour! Therefore I'd like to know if anyone has any recomendations in relation to places that are definately worth seeing and things that are worth missing. Also any general advice about travelling alone through Central America would be much appreciated!

I just completed my Central America trip by bus this year and it was a fantastic journey.
Dont worry I think you will have plenty of time to see what you want to see and enjoy a few beaches. would suit your trip,I did'nt use them as I had more time but when you want to go somewhere other than their routes just use ordinary buses.
I'am a citybum come beachbum so in Liberia;Costa Rica jump off and go down Playa del Coca for 2-4 lovely beaches.
At San Jose;Costa Rica catch a bus to Puerto Limon for a day, then Cahuita for a day then Puerto Viejo for a day as great beaches and night life then cross border into Panama and go to Boca del Toro for a few days as its a great beach and fun place, for all the info check my profile and Jacks Travels!!!!!
I was never alone most of the time as lots of travellers on the road and Lonely Planet Central America has all the info.
Just try catching a bus first thing in the morning appox 0800 and jump off 1200,4hrs max, dump your bag in your room and out siteseeing,
dont travel to go into strange places(towns) night time.
Have a great trip and you will enjoy your Central America trip for ever.
al de bes
