Anyone made the trip across the river into Laos from Cambodia? My reading suggests it is possible to do, but that the crossing is not an official one. How difficult is it, and are there any places to stay on the border?

Have not made the crossing, maybe this year but Lonely Planet SE Asia state no problems with crossing.
Also their is plenty of guesthouses each side for sleeping who will also arrange transport to boat.
Have a good trip and enjoy your travels.

Hi dave,

Did the crossing in Sept...officially it is the international border crossing....from the Cambodian border town of Stung Treng, take fast boat (USD25 per boat - share with other travellers) for a one hour ride up the Mekong River to the Cambodian immigration outpost at Dong Crorlor for exit stamp. Leave ur backpack in the boat as it will take you to the jetty on the Laotian side...The immigration outpost is at Veun Kham, about 1km from the jetty. walk or ride pillion ( about 5,000 kips USD$=10,000 kips) to the outpost for entry stamp...and from here take a songthaew to Pakse - the wait at the row of food stallas nearby.

Note that the immigration chaps both sides expect something...USD$ is the norm...

as for place to stay, in stung treng, you can try the Sekong hotel...the jetty is right in front of it...look out for this chap James...he is Cambodian, and speaks english, good cheerful chap..even helps to arrange for boat...leave early 8am is fine.

there is nothing much to see in stung treng, just sit by the waterfront, enjoy your beer at nite!. Of course james will volunteer to show the night scene..

I too, made the journey from Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, to Stung Trung to Laos via the fast boat up the mekong.

The border was open just had to greese the customs hands a bit $3 or a bit more for 3 of us.

There were transport waiting to take travellers to Si Phan Don.
