Hey Guys

I am going to south east asia in mid-feb until mid-march and i plan on spending a week or so in Thailand beafore moving on to Vietnam. As i plan on visiting Koh-Phangan i would be interested to know if it is true that you can go by boat to Vietnam from southern Thailand?
If not what are some of the options with regards to flight and what price should one expect?

thank you very much

I didn't to the boat trip Vietnam to thailand but instead got a boat from Vietnam (ChaoDoc) to Cambodia (PhnomPehn) (fantastic - need visa) and then flew to Siem Reap and onto Bangkok. In Thailand we went to KohSamui as well and used a deal from Bangkok Airways (it was something like - buy 3 airfares and get them at a discounted price)....have a look at the bangkok airways website. We found them to be a really nice airline - the planes are often very small but the staff are great. You can book trips by boat to get you over the boarder Viet-Cambodia at most hotels/hostels - or sometimes from local travel guides. Didn't hear of anyone having troubles with this system! You can do Vietnam-Cambodia-Thailand as an overland trip but some of them do take time (which we didn't have) and are often a bit unorganised. Safety was also a bit of a concern for us too(2 lone females).

If you do decide to boat it to Cambodia from Vietnam - use the 'fast' boat. The 'fast' boat is an extra $2-3US and takes about 4-5hrs to do the trip to PP and the slow one about 8hrs - you won't miss any of the scenery I promise!! You still get to see it all..I am not easily bored at all (almost never take reading material on buses or planes cause I find sitting back and watching everything very interesting) but think I would have found the 8-9hr trip a bit of a struggle!...anyway, that is my opinion and I'm sure others will feel differently :)

Hope this helps!!

I do not think you can go from Thailand to Vietnam via boat. Where would you land to clear Immigration & Customs? Best bet is fly from BKK on Air Asia to Hanoi(HAN), or from Singapore to HAN on Tiger Air. It is an interesting slog to go from Thailand to HCMC overland, but you need time and a strong butt for van, bus and boats. PM me if you want details.
