Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific Mobile phone - free sim cards?

Anyone know of any mobile firms that offer free sims that I can use with my own phone?

Who is the cheapest as well?

And anyone know someone in Sydney who can unlock phones?

I bought a pre-paid sim card from a vodafone shop in Sydney, i kept my phone, i originally had me UK vodafone contract sim card. It cost $30 but you get $30 worth of credit-so basically i didnt pay for the sim card. I think its pretty easy to top up as well.

The two major mobile phone operators in Australia are Vodafone and Telstra and actually, Telstra have the best coverage.

I've already been in touch with them to ask whether I could buy their pre-paid plus starter kit and have it posted to my home in the UK before I depart. However, they cannot do this as the pack needs to be delivered to an Australian address and signed for. They did however advise me that there is a Telstra store in Sydney Airport, so I can just buy my starter kit when I get off the plane.

It costs $25 and you get $25 included credit and 6 months network access pre-loaded on your service.

Anyway, I wouldn't use Vodafone as I never liked them here in the UK. But that's just me.............

Hope this helps!

Kate ;)

Just echoing what the others have said, it doesn't cost anything to actually buy the simcard- what you pay you get in credit. text messages in australia are around 25c unless you have a special deal. another major mobile phone company is optus and they have similar deals to telstra.

Unlocking phones:

Try the markets, thats where my mates go, there's usually someone dodgy who'll do it.

Vodafone has SIM cards for $2.00 - effectively free.

Just to let anyone reading this and wanting a sim for themselves that I went with Vodafone. $30 dollars for the sim but yes $30 "free" credit. So the sim itslf is free really. Not had any problems so far with it.

I got my Nokia unlocked myself. It's actually very easy but the dodgy blokes in Sydney are charging $30 to do it. Go to the mobile phone forums at to have a look. Although some phones can only be unlocked by cable I believe.
