I am arriving in Sydney on the 30th of December to spend a year travelling and working in Australia. I've been to Aus twice but I'm going with two girlfriends that have never been before. I was thinking of trying to get tickets to a nightclub or something like that for New Years, but instead thought it would be more exciting to just pre drink at the hostel and then spend the rest of the night roaming the streets and visiting bars we come across. Have never spent New Years in Sydney, so thought this would be a better idea rather than being stuck in one nightclub all night.....anyone have any say on the matter??

im wondering if there's any point booking a room at a hostel -i haven't done so yet.. and it looks as if they're all booked up now anyway.

But i'm thinking everyone's probably gonna be partying throughout the night anyways so..

Staying up and partying can be done, but at some point you are going to need to crash. As a last resort maybe book a hostel for January 1st and by the time check in time comes you'll be able to go to the hostel and pass out. It's my birthday on the 1st so there'll definitely be some partying going on for me that night as well.....good luck with figuring out your accommodations situation!

Well first off your coming to the right place for NYE . The hostel thing will be hard if you don't try and book something now . Even now i'd say its pretty late

But try Who knows you might be really lucky

As for where to hang out . You have a few options

1. Hang out at the Harbour but get there really early as it gets really crowded .

2. Head to Bondi and hang out on the beach . They usally have a NYE gig on the beach . Tickets to get in but you can hang out side the wire for free stil here the DJ's and have fun

3. Try something like Utopia
NYE 2005 – 2006 Sydney

Theres plenty of things to do in Sydney

Hope some of this helps

Last year me and few mates were over there and just took a few boxes of wine to Circular Quay where you can chill on the grass.

I would recommend getting there early afternoon as it gets rammed later on! Fantastic views though. Call in some bars etc afterwards on your way back to wherever!

Have a good one!

I spent NYE 2003/4 in Sydney and went to Cargo on Darling Harbour. I was staying with friends who were living and working in the city at the time. I seem to remember it costing around 80 dollars to get in plus stupid amounts for drinks/champagne etc (ok for them but it didn't do my travellers budget much good!)

Couldn't see the main bridge fireworks from there but could see the other displays going off around the harbour. All in all a good night, plus we managed to gate crash the party at the Slip In (which was bloody excellent!)

From what I've heard I wouldn't bother trying to get close to the Bridge or Circular Quay. I know people who spent hours waiting once they'd found a good vantage point only to have the whole thing ruined by groups of pi**ed up lads fighting throughout the firework display.
