Check out the Greyhound buses, they go eveywhere! This is their website: www.greyhound.com .
I would check out a tourist information place also, i was looking at doing a similar trip up to SF when I was in LA a few months back and I also checked out the trains!
Have a look at the Amtrack site:
www.amtrack.com or have a look at www.wgn.net/~elson/larail this is the official site for Union Station in LA.
Personally I would go for the Greyhound, Ive had some good laughs on them and met some insane people!!!!Have fun!!!!

We did a similar route on the Greyhound (Vegas to San Fran via LA), only it doesn't take you to the lovelly places along the coast on Pacific Highway 1, it takes the direct route along the freeway.

I think you can buy a package that covers a certain number of miles so you can hop on and hop off but it won't be like the Oz Experience, not too many other backpackers, mostly poor Americans who cannot afford their own cars.

We met some crazy people on those buses!!

I went by greyhound from LA to SF and it is decent. It is about 7 hours so you don't get too uncomfortable. The bus doesn't make that many stops and yeah you definitely meet weird people in those buses!

Depending on when you are planning to travel, green tortoise does a trip up Highway 1 but only in the summer.
