Been down under, there are lots of ways to get around depending on time and cost. Planes may be more expensive but not if you are short on time. Trains can be taken too. We did consider travelling from Brisbane to Sydney by train but it's 14.5 hours, about 1.5 hours by plane. In eleven days we did the following. Saw Sydney, flew to Alice Springs, bus trip to Uluru, flight to Cairns, rail trip to Kuranda, skyrail back to Cairns, bus to Port Douglas, boat to Great Barrier Reef, bus back to Cairns, flight to Brisbane, flight to Sydney then onto New Zealand. Saw quite a bit of the country in a short time. At the end it comes down to balancing cost against the time you have available. We prebooked a lot of stuff through a New Zeland travel agents and found it very good.

How much time do you have? If you have a bit of time then maybe buy a van. 5 people means you can split the cost nicely, but it also means its probably too small for you all to sleep in. Check out for bus passes that cover all parts of Australia. They're flexible get-on-get-off passes. Combine those with a flight in between the big trips (from anywhere to Perth) to save some time.
