Anyone know the hostels that the YouthHostelsAssociation Hostelling International discount applies in Melbourne ? Is there somewhere on the web where you can find out where discounts apply in each city .

Any help much appreciated

This is the website. Any YHA hostel should be able to give you a booklet featuring all the hostels that the discount applies to.

I can highly recommend a stay at Chapman Gardens. (Err, Melbourne Oasis now; silly renaming.) Their main room type is a twin room, which goes for the same price as you get a four-bed dorm at the other hostel (and as such about a 50-50 chance of a room to yourself outside of peak season), and the nicest cozy atmosphere ever. Plus, the main lounge is TV-free, in contrast to the Metro one which has this huge screen constantly playing silly AFL and other sports.
It's slightly further out from the center of town that Metro, but the tram stops almost right outside the door, and it's even still walkable (~20 minutes). Also make certain to go wander through Royal Park (one block north) around sunset when staying there; the rainbow lorrikeets are absolutely crazy around that time, and will divebomb you en masse. Much fun! :)

I stayed at the metro one for 10 days, its very clean and modern, would recommend it, but can a little more expensive than the chapman gardens, which like sander says is a little way out of town, but there are plenty of trams going by.. I did visit the chapman gardens one, had some friends staying there, is also good and a few dollars cheaper a night, but is an older hostel and that bit further out of town.

hope that helps
