Hi Brown,
March is a great time to be in the Southern States of OZ. Don't head into the Northern areas of Australia until say ... May.
March is still Autumn (Fall) and anywhere in Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and the South of Western Australia, would be fine with fairly stable warm beach weather.

When in Melbourne, take the opportunity to have a real good look around, maybe go inland 100KM to Ballarat (Soverign Hill - recreated 1860's gold diggings), Phillip Island (Beaches & penguins), The Dandenong Ranges (scenery & stean train), the Great Ocean Road (scenery & beaches), Healsville (wildlife park), The Yarra Valley (wine). And, in Melbourne, the al fresco dining, pubs, shopping & more.
In summary where to after Melb !!
1. Go to Adelaide via the coast - incorporate the Great Ocean road.
2. Go to Sydney via Echuca (inland) or the Princes Highway & Gippsland coast roads.
Cheers - Mario

I'd second all of the above by the very informative mabba and throw in the Grampians if you were headed South Australia way. Or Wilsons Prom if you head through Gippsland. Both stunning national parks! Very jealous
