I am going to be spending a few months in New Zealand from Jan-May. Can any one give me good sites to see? Most of my time is on the south island. Any ideas would be great...also what does Auckland have to offer on a day time limit?

You lucky person. Is this all leisure time?
I could go on forever (no really!) but I will just add a few to those already mentioned:
Te Anau (south) - beautiful lake and a good base for Milford. Book ahead or arrive early as it can fill up quickly in peak times.
Tongariro National Park (north) - Some fantastic volcanic scenery. Takes longer to drive through than the map suggests, because of the twisty roads!
Christchurch (south) - pretty little city for chilling out in.
Kaikoura (south) - Whalewatching, but not if it's windy.
Blenheim (south) - boring town, great vineyards.
Nelson (south) - not bad for shopping before you head north. Or you could wait for Wellington.
Waitomo (north) - Glow-worm caves which you explore on a big black rubber ring. No really. Also Te Tiro cabins - two sheds on a farm which we found in an emergency and which turned out to be a real highlight of our trip - mainly because they were a hundred times nicer than we expected them to be!
