Hi Danny,
3 months is quite a good timescale, but you'll still leave wanting to stay longer!
Due to the huge distances in Australia, it really is worth taking time to plan a rough route so that you don't have to double-back, possibly losing a week or two in travelling time.
It also depends on whether you're driving everywhere, or can afford to fly.
Uluru is a popular trip, but is days from anywhere else by road. If you really want to get there, try to make this a plane (or train) trip, as it will take a huge chunk out of your time.

I would recommend that you fly in and out of different cities too.
e.g. Fly into Darwin or Cairns, travel down the east coast via Brisbane, Sydney and on to Melbourne. You may even have time to see Adelaide or even fly on to Perth before you fly out.

As a guide to distance, we were intending to drive up and down the east coast (doubling-back, like I just told you not to - I speak from experience!) and were told by a car-hire place that it would take 2 weeks minimum just to do the driving from Sydney to Cairns! Four-to six if you wanted to see things!
