1. do they use rand or us dollars?
2. anything i should be aware of (rules/travel gear) when im in the safari.
3. is it safe to go out at night in the city?
4. what souvenirs can i get there, other than diamonds and leather goods?
5. what i shouldn't miss when i get there? i dont wanna come back, and ppl telling me "u went all the way to south africa and didn't do that?! r u nutzz?" u know what i mean?

They use rands, that's the national currency. It's safer if you just exchange it. I lived in Mozambique for 4 years and had the chance of going to S.A several times. It is an amazing country! You'll love it:) Enjoy

Oh yes, I almost forgot! There are tons of souvenirs you can purchase. If you like music, you'll like some CDs of african choirs....they're unbelieveble- try Lady Smith Black Mambazo...also they have lots of souvenirs, some really striking like carved ostrich eggs-- those are totally allowed everywhere I think.

If you get this in time - souvenirs - anything wooden arts/ beads etc. Places to go to are more NB, i.e experiences. if you like politics - the Apartheid museum, Soweto tours - Johannesburg. Then from Joburg - Kruger park is 4 hours away - you have to see A game reserve at least. Going out is fine at night, in the suburban areas, and less to in the depths of the cities. Go where other people go, and dont go alone somewhere in the city - if alone you will be target to be robbed of possessions (maybe?). Otherwise safety is okay. Cape Town - tabel mountain, A wine farm - any, Cable car, robben island, Cape point. Do what makes you happy dont follow what the Jobnes say about doing this and that. Theres lots do.

u guyz, i just got back and i had the most wonderful time. i just love capetown! beautiful city, beautiful people, everything so beautiful!! i went to seal island, ostrich farm, saw penguins at boulders, took pictures at cape of good hope and cape point and i ate lobsters at the navys. but you know what, the table mountain was on fire! one stupid tourist threw his cigarette and the mountain is in smoke. i cannot believe i travelled half the world to capetown and couldnt go up the mountain. i guess i have to come back again.

then i went to pretoria, went to paul kruger's house then stayed at sun city hotel. fantastic hotel!! i went to pilanesberg reserve. saw zebras, giraffes, an elephant (huge), hippos (they dont want to leave the water it seems), springbrooks, antelopes, baboons, many types of birds, mongoose and rhinos. next morning went to lion farm where i held a cub. the cubs are cute. off to lesedi town, tribal village. love the language, the dance, the food, the music. love it, love it, love it.

spent 2 days at joburg, just shopping around, went to that monument, dunno what's that monument called again then ermm i went to gold reef mining farm. i had great fun there.

i love south africa so much. definitely going back again! the souvenirs are so expensive, but i bought a lot of stuff anyway, lol. thanks for all the advice!
