Hiring a car is definitely the most convinient way of exploring the country! If you just want to see main cities, that's ok if you use public transport. But the car actually gives you the freedom to spot everywhere you feel like stoping.

I did so, and it was great. So many things happened in just 3 days of driving. I meet a lot of people, saw things I would have never seen... I don't know, is just another way of doing it, and was a lot of fun.

If you are worried about driving in the other side of the road, don't worry. I am spanish and had no problems. It is just a matter of getting used to it, and it takes you no more than 15 minutes of driving. I hired a car in Dublin city, at AVIS office... It was 120€ for a Nissan Micra (3 days).

Hire a car - its the best way to see the country - you can get off the main roads and stop off in the little towns and villages scattered throughout the countryside. Thes best places in the country are only accessible by car - e.g. Dingle and the Ring of Kerry, The Burren in Co. Clare, Connemara in Galway. The list is endless.

And the roads are not as crazy as people make out. Only in the really remote parts of the country do they get very narrow and winding!

Hope you have a great time in Ireland!

I have been in Ireland (both Republic and Northern) and my sensation is that to use the public transportation is quite a lack of time... much better to rent a car.

BTW I am surely returning to travel to this country, starting and finishing in Dublin, from April 7th to 15th (aprox., not totally fixed yet). I am travelling alone, so any possible companion is interesting. Please leave me a line in this case.
