I am planning a trip to costa rica in the near future and keep hearing about wonderful, budget cabinas. However, I can't find names of any of these. If anyone could help, it would be great. I am looking into surfing/backpacking and need places to stay!!!

There looked like there were quite a few inexpensive places to stay in Mal Pais / Santa Teresa. Rooms for about $15-$20, and camping that was much cheaper.

There are lots of good places to stay in most towns. I never bothered booking ahead, I just arrived in town and wandered around until I found a place I liked.

I travelled around Costa Rica with my own tent and it was amazingly cheap, most places have decent facilities and you can meet tonnes of people! I stayed in Dominical, Montezuma, Santa Teresa, Cahuita and Peurto Viejo which are all on the coast. I didn't pay more than $5 per night!!! You don't have to book, you can just turn up and pitch the tent, its the best way to travel by far!

Most of the year in Latin America, except Semana Santa (Easter Holy Week), when the entire region is on vacation, THIS YEAR April 9-16 you can find budget lodgings available in both cities and small towns, without booking in the price range of $10-$40 or so per double or triple room, some of thes places have Internet but very few boast websites and fewer book from abroad. If you need advance reservations of course do the booking engines and upscale places with bi lingual websites.
