Salar de Uyuni to Chile

Hi all, I'm new here!

I'm travelling around South America with my girlfriend for three months in June of this year but I've hit a bit of a snag with the plans.

We're doing Lima, Cuzco, Nasca, lake titty. La Paz and then down to Salar Uyuni for the salt plains but from there we need to get down to Santiago for a flight to Rio.

STA travel sorted us a flight from La Paz but we'll need to change at Arica, then Iquique before going to Santiago and it sounds like a real pain. When I look at the map it seems like a short hop over from the salt plains to Iquique which would save on the transfers but everywhere I look and read, travellers are going the other way!!

Everyone seems to travel from Chile through San Pedro and then to Uyuni but I wondered if anyone has managed to get to Iquique from Bolivia without going south through San Pedro Atacama??

If it's too much hassle I suppose we'll have to go back to La Paz but it seems a shame to backtrack the same route and then endure 3 flights!

Hope someone's able to help... its really the only gap we have!

You have to remember is the desert you are talking about, big distances and high altitudes.
Next Uyuni Salar there are two border "Pasos" : Ollag├╝e at south and Colchane at north of it. Maybe you could find transport via Colchane-Huara-Iquique probably starting in Oruro.

Good Luck
Being in the middle of nowhere is part of the adventure.

Thanks for the advice Catu.

I'll check those two options out. If we can't find it now we'll do it there and still have fun!

Can't wait!

Hi KJ22

From Oururo you can cross the Salar Uyuni until San Pedro de Atacana (chile) 3 days trip with 4x4 car (it is amazing) then go to Calama( 2 hours) and then to Arica (10 hours. You can fligh to Santiago or 24 hours bus.

have a nice trip
