im going to melbourne in a weeks time and was wondering if anybody would recommend a hostel to stay at while im there cheers
where to stay in melbourne
I can't recommend a good one, but I can tell you one to AVOID. Make sure unless you are going to find yourself sleeping on the streets, that you avoid staying at All Nations Backpackers. That is a really crappy hostel which never got cleaned the whole time I was there (5 days). The toilets didn't have toilet paper in them for all apart from the last day, the rooms were noisy and smelly. I could go on and on as to reasons to avoid, but this has probably bored you enough.
Nomads Industry is brand new; Base St Kilda is very cool; The Friendly Backpackers in the city is a top central location.
Oh that is so right about All Nations Backpackers. I stayed there too. It was a dump. And freezing in winter. Only good thing was people were quite friendly and there were lots of videos, and it was right next to the market.
I stayed in the Base Backpackers Hostels in Wellington, NZ. They're a bit pricey but nice.
you guys are bashing my hostel all nations this place wasent one of my favorite places to stay in australia it WAS my favorite place to stay. i stayed at all nations for 6 months and loved every moment of it. it wasent the cleanest hostel i'll admit but the people and staff were amazing. i worked in the bar with nearly all the time i was their and met some of the coolest people. the location is great price is even better and you can always find work for accomidation and a job center upstairs.
i had the time of my life staying their and met life long friends. their isent a better hostel in melbourne this place has a ton of charecter and an amazing staff.

Yah, if you are looking for cleaniness, Base backpacker is very good. And it's located at St Kilda, so if you are looking to spending time on the beach, it's a good place to be staying in. Meet lotsa funky people too.
TylarJames, it may have some character, but person hygene, is not high on the list. Customer appreciation by staff at the hostel, is way low on the list of priorities. Actually making the place so people didn't have to shit in the toilet to dry in their pants was not a priority. Cleaning the rooms even the slightest even after some drunk guy spewed all through the room rolling through his vomit trying to get to his bed, was too much to ask. Get the drift? SHIT HOSTEL QUALITY, being able to not have to smell like a clump of poo is not high on the priority list, nor is allowing guests to stay in a room that is cleaned and doesn't have spew spread through out. THE PERSONAL HYGENE BELIEFS OF THE HOSTEL ARE DISGUSTING. It has a GOOD SOCIAL VIBE, SHIT STAFF, GOOD LOCATION (except the whole time I was there, which had roads works going to all hours of the night stright out the front and up the road a little) and shit quality rooms. The front door was even smashed right down the middle rather badly, right down the centre where if someone touched it slightly hard it would break off, and they didn't have it fixed in the time I was there. Had I not already prebooked and paid, I would have been there 1 night and left no doubts about it. Anything goes there. I've stayed about 100 hostels throughout the world, and All Nations ranks as about number 3 on my all time worst list. For Hygene it comes second on the worst list, only to a nightmare from hell place in Prague which sewer rats would find attractive. I doubt anyone could name a worse hostel for hygene anywhere in Australia, nor could they name a worse one for the quality and smell of the rooms which are never cleaned.

Leo's in Cairns comes close!
