If you want to go to Hanoi in "easy way", it must be via Vientiane. It can't be from Luang Prabang straight to Hanoi.

The first cheap alternative is by "tourist" bus - about USD 18. It takes 24 hours with few hours stop in the border. Be aware that the both immigration offices are very greedy and transparent in terms of money under table. Prepare yourself with 15 pcs of note USD 1 and be ready to have two kinds of notes (vietnam dong and laotian kip).

The second alternative is by plane with route Luang Prabang - Vientiane - Hanoi. It costs USD 270. It can be done in one day with Bangkok Airways, Lao Airlines (please check again!).

However, there is "not-easy way" from Luang Prabang to Hanoi through new international border ...

The price for Luang Prabang-Vientiane-Hanoi shouldonly be about $160 with Laos Airlines. Some of the travel agents around luang prabang can hook you up with pretty good discounts as well. If you want to save a little money take a bus down to Vientiane and break up your journey with a few days in Vang Vieng and then just fly from Vientiane ordo the bus trip over a couple of days. I have just got back from Laos and the bus rides are not so bad. The roads in the last year have been done up a fair bit to accomodate the increasing number of tourists heading there...

I did the trip by "tourist bus" last February! It took about 28 hours. And it was what you would call "character building". It was just before Vietnamese New Year, so the bus was packed with students going back for the holiday. There were people sat all down the aisles and evrything!

The border crossing was a nightmare. Basically it was a free-for-all, survival of the fittest, everyone pushing to get their passports into a hole in a window where they were stamped, then thrown back out into the scrum. Eventually two of the bigger British and Israeli guys off the bus, pushed through and sorted it for the us, or who knows if we'd have ever got through!

If you have the time, patience and want to save money, its not so bad. I don't regret it though, it was a funny story afterwards, if not at the time! And the photos of the bus are a laugh.
