Dear travellers,

2 friends and I are going to Europe for 2 months (at the least), we'll set off on 9th March, arriving in Paris on 10th March.

I am very nervous since this is our first time going to Europe.

We'll spend 4 days in Paris then fly to Milan (on Ryanair, tickets already booked), we'll be there for 10 days. Can anyone recommend any cheap but safe hostels/hotels in Rome?

Another question, we were thinking about taking a laptop, however, it would be heavy for the time being and we worried about it being stolen... is it a good idea to take it with us? (if we take it, we'd be able to save money on calling our families as well as saving troubles storing our digital photos. I dont know any other way to store our pictures if we are not taking a laptop...)

It would be most appreciate if you could provide me some advice!

for pictures: you can go to a photo shop and ask them to download your picture and save them in a cd. Or you can bring with you more memory cards. (I wouldn't suggest to take the laptop with you).
you can buy international cards for callings, or maybe you can go to an internet centre, if they have skype or something similar.

In Rome I stayed in a hostel called The Navigator, it's pretty near the Termini and close to a subway station as well. The hostel was very clean (although only dormitory style accomodations) and the owner was quite a character (he smokes about 5 packs a day, but only in the common room, the dorms are smoke free). If you're going to be staying out late, he will give you a key for a small deposit. Nothing special (although it does have air conditioning which was most helpful when I was there in July) but clean and friendly.
